Late singer Aretha Franklin won a posthumous Pulitzer Prize on Monday for her "indelible contribution to American music and culture." She received a "special award and citation," which the Pulitzer committee grants to recognize general achievements; the last special award went to singer-songwriter Hank Williams in 2010. Another special award went to Annapolis, Maryland newspaper the Capital Gazette for its "courageous response" to a mass shooting in its newsroom last year. Other major awards went to ProPublica, The New York Times, and the South Florida Sun Sentinel.
